Associate Professor of Painting Joe Pena’s artworks were selected for the 2017 Texas Biennial in Austin, Texas, a group survey exhibition curated from a statewide open call. Exhibition Dates: September 30 – November 11, 2017
The sixth iteration of Big Medium’s Texas Biennial. The show features works by 33 artists and is curated by Leslie Moody Castro. “The exhibition will focus on three elements, all of which are relevant to our present cultural climate and shape of contemporary art: 1) exploring current art making across the state, 2) deconstructing the Texas identity, and 3) examining the state as a border zone.”
Moody Castro has a history of making artistic voices and the communities they work within central to her practice, all of which oscillate around the importance of place. Moody Castro toggles between Mexico City and Austin as her primary locations, but has an identity in itinerancy. Moody Castro is also a regular contributor for Artforum, Flash Art International, Frieze Magazine, ArtNews, and ArtCritical. Moody Castro earned her Master’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin in Museum Education with a portfolio supplement in Museum Studies in 2010, and her Bachelor’s degree in Art History at DePaul University in Chicago in 2004.
